Abstract
Every aircraft suffer fatigue damage and, as a results, each type of aircrafts given a fatigue life at which point it must either be retired from service or modified to permit further flying. The consumption of fatigue life must be monitored to make sure the safe fatigue life is not exceeded. This is measured with a fatigue meter system consisting of an accelerometer type instrument and recorder. Fatigue life consumption is measured in terms of Fatigue Index (FI). This is a non-dimensional number calculated either from fatigue meter readings or by assessment of the sortie flown. Limiting values of FI for any structural component are based on design calculations and full-scale fatigue testing. When a fatigue meter is carried on the aircraft and all related sortie details have been correctly entered on the Flying Log Data Sheet, a fatigue damage calculation can be carried out. If the aircraft does not have a fatigue meter installed, or an installed meter is unserviceable, FI is assessed from the details of the sortie flown and is dependent upon the type and theatre of aircraft operations. Fatigue consumption of this way is always greater then more accurate consumption figures calculated from fatigue meter readings.
