Abstract

Background. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that will suffer for a lifetime by the patient. In 2015 adult DM patients in the world were approximately 415 million people and it was estimated that it would increase to 612 million by 2040, in Indonesia the prevalence of DM shows that DM patients based on age 15 years were 3.4%. Regency/city most DM patients are Pontianak city that is 5.3%, while people with diabetes mellitus in RSUD Dr Soedarso Pontianak in 2018 as many as 110 people. Purpose. To determine the perception of vulnerability, seriousness, benefits and perceived obstacles in controlling diabetes mellitus in patients with diabetes mellitus in RSUD Dr. Soedarso Pontianak with the Health Belief Model theoretical approach. Method. This type of research is observational analytic with a "cross-sectional" design approach. The research sample of 49 respondents was taken using accidental techniques. Data collection was using a questionnaire. Research result. There is a relationship between perceived vulnerability with a value (p-value 0.015), perceived seriousness (p-value 0.018), perceived benefits (p-value 0.029) and perceived obstacles (p-value 0.007) on diabetes mellitus control behavior. Conclusion. Perception of perceived vulnerability, perceived seriousness, perceived usefulness and perceived obstacles perceived influence diabetes mellitus control behavior in people with diabetes mellitus. Suggestion. To health workers to improve and provide health education about diabetes mellitus control behavior in people with diabetes mellitus.
