Abstract

CTS symptoms were foundin a number of informal workers as the operator of coconut grater machines at traditional markets in Pontianak. CTSis one of common neurologicdisorders atwristdue to compressionon median nervein carpal tunnel.The purpose of this study wasgettingthe figures of CTS symptoms occurred ongrated coconut workersat traditional markets in Pontianak.This study uses descriptive design. A number of 50 personswere recordedas total population ofgrated coconut workersat traditional markets in the City of Pontianak. Data were analyzed statistically into univariate. The variables are years of working, length of work time, vibration intensity, the other disease/medical disorders history, treatment and the CTS symptom. The results show there are 18,0% of them worked> 10 years; 36,0% of themworked> 8 hours a day; 28,0% of them were exposured by vibration with intensity equal to > 4 m/s 2 ; 24,0% of them has the other disease/medical disorders; 12,0% of them consuming analgesic and piridoksin; and 72,0% of them were diagnosedas workers withCTS symptom. The local goverment should be aware to these grated coconut workers throughoccupational health promotion and supervising their machines feasibility. The workers should also consider their rotary engine speed, length of exposure timeand the turning time of handlingas good as possibleto reducemechanical vibration exposure, especiallywhile fresh grated coconut in increasing demand, and thenconsultwith a physicianorphysiotherapistto preventmedian nerve paralysis or disability due to their work.
