Abstract

Obesitys a medical conditionin which excess body fat has accumulated to the extentthat it may have an adverse effect on health. Obesity is due to excess intake of energy in the body that does not fit the needs of our bodies. Police officers are at risk of psychological trauma that can increase the stress level. This can lead to the sleep deprivation and increased appetite which can be the contributory factors of obesity. Obesity in police officers might lower their physical activities, decrease work productivity, and reduce life expectancy. Cross sectional approach was carried out in this study. 80 samples were selected by using proportional random sampling. Then, the data were statistically analyzed by using chi square test. The study revealed two findings. First, there were correlation of genetic factors of obesity (p value=0,001, PR=1,912, CI 95% = 1,366-2,675), eating patterns (p value=0,000, PR=6,206, CI 95% = 1,674-23,012), exercise habits (p value=0,046, PR=1,620, CI 95% = 0,998-2,628), and obesity in police officers. Second, there were no correlation of smoking status (p value=0,886), occupational stress (p value=0,132), and sleep adequacy (p value= 0,512). From the findings, the head of Police District Commands of Pontianak is encouraged to make a policy for obesity police officers to do routine exercises weekly. They are also recommended to apply healthy lifestyle by consuming more fruits and vegetables and exercise three days a week for at least 30-60 minutes.
